Recently, the promoters of Loop Mobile, Khaitan Holdings Group have exited the telecom space with the acquisition of Loop Mobile by Bharti Airtel for Rs. 700 Crores. The attractiveness of Loop acquisition is the 8 MHz of spectrum in the 900 MHz frequency band. This band requires less number of telephone towers and is more efficient. With this deal Airtel’s subscriber base will touch more than 7 million. The deal also includes 2,500 telecom towers and optic fiber equipment. Employees of Loop Mobile are not part of the deal and face an uncertain future. Loop’s employees have received communication that the acquisition will complete in two months’ time.
This acquisition will help Bharti Airtel to emerge as the leading service provider in the metro. According to Moody’s Investors Service this makes it the top operator in Mumbai based subscriber base while Vodafone continues to be the market leader in terms of revenue Post-acquisition. Vodafone in order to consolidate its market position is wooing Loop Mobile post paid subscribers to port over by offering attractive deals on mobile data and voice services.
Loop Mobile subscribers will be continued to be serviced at the rates before acquisition. Airtel in its statement released to the press said that the companies have not signed the agreement as the deal is subject to regulatory approval. Meanwhile in the 2 G scam case Loop Telecom Limited’s plea to move the case to Lok Adalat was dismissed by the special CBI court.
