Videocon Telecom, formerly known as Videocon Mobile Services, is a mobile network operator that offers GSM services to subscribers in India. The headquarters of the company is located in Gurgaon, Haryana. It was established by Videocon Industries a subsidiary in the year 2008. The former Videocon Mobile Services rebranded itself and changed the company logo on 19th September 2013. When it was at the peak of its performance, Videocon had licenses covering 18 of the 22 telecommunications circles in India. But of the 18 circles, Videocon had launched its services in only 11. After the scam with the 2G spectrum, the Supreme Court issued cancellations on 122 licenses that were given by the Government of India in 2008. Thus, 21 of Videocon’s licenses were cancelled. In the spectrum auction that occurred 2012, Videocon was able to get back 6 of those licenses.
Promised Launch of 4G network
Videocon had started with 2G services, but soon the company had upgraded its network to include 3G. After the launch of 3G network for its subscribers, the next logical step would be to upgrade to 4G. And that was the plan. Videocon has plans to launch 4G services in the 1800 MHz spectrum band. The band was secured by the company in November. Among the locations that would be covered include Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Haryana, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh (both west and east), Bihar, and Jharkhand. In fact, Videocon won liberalized spectrum in the bids. This means that it can use various types of technology to offer services in the 1800 MHz band. Videocon has chosen to go with LTE FDD technology for its services. Soon it plans to roll out the 4G network for its subscribers in the 1800 MHz band. It is important to note that the LTE FDD technology on 1800 Mhz is becoming very poluar around the world. Over 30% LTE networks are offered in this band. Therefore, Videocon can certainly benefit from offering services in this band. The accompanying technology and devices are also very advanced in comparison to other companies in India.
As of now Videocon has 5 MHz spectrum in both 2G and 4G networks. Thus, it plans to allocate spectrum automatically to 4G during off peak hours and peak hours. During the peak hours, Videocon’s data services can offer impressive download speeds of up to 9 Mbps on its new LTE network. During the hours that are off peak, the speeds can rise to be as high as 21 Mbps.
Videocon’s major competitors are 14 of the other telecommunications companies in India. These include Vodafone, T24, Virgin Mobile, Idea Cellular, Uninor, Tata Indicom, Tata Docomo, S Tel, Reliance Communications, Ping Mobile, MTS, MTNL, Loop Mobile, Airtel, and Aircel.
