Tata Sky is a satellite television service provides in India. It provides direct broadcast television programs with the use of MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 compression technology. The signals are transmitted through the satellite INSAT 4A. tata Sky was incorporated in 2004, as a joint venture by 21st Century Fox and the Tata Group.
The main competitors of the company are other satellite television service providers, including Videocon 2DH, DD Direct+, Reliance Digital TV, Sun Direct, Dish TV and Airtel Digital. Currently, Tata Sky offers 24 channel in HD, and a total of 263 channels in SD to its subscribers. The products offered by Tata Sky are pay-per-view, pay television, and direct broadcast television.
History of Tata Sky
Tata Sky was the result of a joint venture, and the Tata Group has a 70% stake in the company. STAR India has a further 20% stake. Temasek Holding, a company based in Singapore, picked up a 10% stake in the company from the Tata Group in 2008.
21st Century Fox, which is the parent company of STAR, is the owner of several DTH businesses, including BSkyB in the UK, and Sky Italia. The Sky brand name is owned by British Sky Broadcasting.
In 2006, Tata Sky was only the second company to launch direct-to-home (DTH) services. The company at the time, used the ISRO satellite. In 2005, a contract was signed with ISRO and provisions were made in the INSAT 4A satellite. After a year had passed since the DTH player was introduced (i.e. 2007) Tata Sky requested for more space on the satellite in order to offer more channels to its subscribers. The space was promised in the GSAT 10 satellite. Although it was expected to launch in 2009, the GSAT satellite actually occurred on 2012. However, Tata Sky is yet to acquire the allotted space on the satellite.
Accolades and Awards
The ISO accreditation was awarded to Tata Sky in March 2009. It was the first digital satellite television provider to acquire the ISO 27001: 2005 accreditation. This accreditation is considered as the benchmark of information security. The Information Security Management System (ISMS) relies on maintenance of a strict set of guidelines to for proper functioning. The ISO 27001: 2005 is an internationally set standard which gives specifications and guidance for maintaining the ISMS.
